Hollywood is still complicit with Putin's pariah state, and business is booming in Russia.

Image
This week's Berlin Film Festival, which is being held for the first time since Russia's extensive invasion last year, has focused heavily on the conflict in Ukraine. Volodomyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, came via satellite at the festival's opening ceremony to urge attendees "not to remain silent" against Russia's unwarranted action. In "Superpower," which had its world debut this week, Sean Penn attacked Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling him a "war criminal" and a "creepy little tyrant."  Since the beginning of the conflict, moral fury has not been in short supply as the international film community has supported the Ukrainian war effort in a show of almost unanimity condemnation of the Kremlin's illegal aggression. Nonetheless, a lot of US and foreign businesses covertly carry on doing business with Putin's pariah state or have picked up where they left off once the war started. Review of "BlackBerr...

Carter, however, also played a crucial part in mediating the Camp David agre...

The consequences for agricultural extension services in Punjab and Pakistan of assessing the potential impact of farm-land crimes on technology transfer for small-scale farmers and its mitigating measures

Image
Trespassing on farmland, theft of a farm vehicle, theft of farm equipment, theft of/interference with livestock, and other crimes related to farming are all considered to be "farm crimes." Farm crime may have affected a farming home in more than one way. The economy is severely harmed by crime, and the general public pays close attention to it. Yet the literature does not do a good job of capturing the relationship between crime and health for both victims and non-victims. We distinguish between the impact on citizens' mental health caused by crime rates in their immediate neighbourhood (local) and crime rates in the neighbouring areas using spatial methods (spatial). The paper's key innovation is the use of these crime rates at a localised level (about 8500 residents) to more accurately interpret changes in local crime patterns and their impacts on an individual's mental wellbeing. In contrast to prior research, this one looked at crime rates in greater geographi...

IMF-mandated Finance (Supplemental) Bill, 2023, also known as the mini-budget, was introduced in both houses of parliament on Wednesday. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar called for the establishment of a national commission to look into the causes of the "economic decline" in the nation over the previous four years and reaffirmed his offer to political parties to create a national economic agenda. A grim-faced finance minister gave a 35-minute speech at the sparsely attended National Assembly session, blaming the previous PTI administration for the nation's economic problems but asserting that the current administration was committed to carrying out the agreement the previous leaders had made with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), since "an agreement with the IMF is an agreement with the state and not with a government." The finance measure was later presented to the Senate by the finance minister. The government then decided to try to pass the bill through the ...

Image
In the midst of controversy surrounding a BBC documentary that criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's role in deadly riots twenty years ago, Indian tax inspectors searched the BBC's offices in New Delhi and Mumbai for a second day on Wednesday, according to two sources. According to a government source and a source at the BBC's New Delhi bureau, the searches began on Wednesday morning after continuing into the night on Tuesday. The Income Tax Department of India has declined to comment on the search's motivation. Due to the sensitivity of the subject, the sources declined to be named.  The documentary, which centres on Hindu nationalist Modi amid the 2002 outbreak of Hindu-Muslim violence in Gujarat state, was halted by the government last month.
