Tom Cruise hears from Steven Spielberg: "You saved Hollywood's ass." in addition to the possibility that "Top Gun: Maverick" "saved the entire theatrical industry."

At the Oscar nominees luncheon this year, Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise were reunited. Spielberg commended his "Minority Report" and "War of the Worlds" star for "Top Gun: Maverick's" role in protecting the theatrical picture industry. Because of "The Fabelmans" and "Top Gun: Maverick," respectively, Spielberg and Cruise are contenders for best picture this year.

Spielberg told Cruise, "You saved Hollywood's ass and you might have saved theatrical distribution," in a video that was first posted on Instagram by "The Elephant Whisperers" director Kartiki Gonsalves. "The Elephant Whisperers" is up for best documentary short film. Cruise blushed after that.

'Very Happy,' says Steven Spielberg He declined the director position for "Harry Potter," saying, "I sacrificed a great franchise to be with family."

"Top Gun: Maverick" might have rescued the entire cinema sector," Spielberg continued.

Following "Spider-Man: No Way Home," "Top Gun: Maverick" was the second film to earn more than $1 billion at international box offices during the epidemic. Maverick, which earned $1.48 billion, is the 11th-highest-grossing movie of all time (unadjusted for inflation). With $718 million, the movie has the fifth-highest domestic box office earnings.

Even though "No Way Home" had a higher box office haul, it included performers from three different Spider-Man generations. Despite being a sequel, "Mavericksuccess "'s was far from certain. However, the sequel to "Top Gun" from 1986 became a rare classic blockbuster that held steady for months at the box office thanks to word-of-mouth. Repeat customers, according to Paramount, were the driving force behind "Maverick's" success. 16% of the audience had returned more than once by the film's fourth weekend in North American theatres, and 4% had done so three times or more.

Cruise was the main hit of the nominees luncheon, as Variety's Oscars analyst Clayton Davis previously revealed. The "Maverick" actor was praised by many nominees, not just Spielberg. While at the event, Brendan Gleeson, Paul Mescal, Baz Luhrmann, Michelle Yeoh, Austin Butler, and more all made it a point to approach Cruise and take pictures with her.

"The Fabelmans" is nominated for seven Oscars, whereas "Top: Gun Maverick" is only nominated for six. On March 12, ABC will telecast the Oscars.
