Loss of hosting rights for the Under-20 World Cup for Indonesia: FIFA
The FIFA announced on Wednesday that Indonesia's bid to host the under-20 World Cup has been rejected.
The governor of Bali, an island that is mostly Hindu, declined to host Israel's team, prompting Indonesia's football federation (PSSI) to suspend the draw. As a result, the decision was made to withdraw Indonesia as the tournament's host from May 20 to June 11.
Indonesia will no longer serve as the host of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2023, according to a statement from FIFA.
"A replacement host will be revealed as soon as feasible, and the tournament's dates will remain the same. At a later time, decisions on possible fines against the PSSI may also be made.
FIFA further stated that the choice had been made after a meeting between its president Gianni Infantino and PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir.
Officials from PSSI did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment right away.
Earlier this month, demonstrators marched through Jakarta's centre while carrying the flags of Indonesia and Palestine and demanding that Israel be barred from taking part.
The majority of people in Indonesia are Muslims. The majority of Indonesian Muslims follow a moderate form of Islam, but in recent years there has been a rise in religious conservatism that has permeated politics.
The PSSI said earlier this week that losing the hosting rights would hurt Indonesian football teams' chances of competing in other FIFA competitions and result in financial losses of "trillions of rupiah."
Following a catastrophic stampede that resulted in the deaths of 135 spectators at a stadium in East Java in October of last year, FIFA declared on Wednesday that it was dedicated to supporting the PSSI.
According to a statement from FIFA, "Members of the FIFA team will continue to stay in Indonesia in the upcoming months and will provide the necessary help to the PSSI, under the direction of President Thohir."
"A fresh meeting between the presidents of FIFA and PSSI to continue the conversation will be organised soon."
Indonesia automatically qualified for the Under-20 World Cup because it was the host nation, however it hasn't participated in the competition since 1979.
