Trump or Perish Conflicting protests outside of court reflect US division

During one of the protests, a Trump fan attempted to pull the banner of the opposing group, which is when authorities intervened.

A few loud counterprotesters screamed an anti-fascist message as dozens of Donald Trump fans demonstrated outside the courthouse where the former president is scheduled to be arraigned on criminal charges on Tuesday.

The community relations branch of the New York Police Department intervened as the pro-Trump side hurled epithets at their rivals while many were wearing recognisable "MAGA" hats and clothing covered in the American flag.

But the majority of the space outside Manhattan's criminal court was occupied by reporters as they awaited the historic indictment of a US president at a hearing at 2:15 PM (1815 GMT).

Trump was scheduled to show up in the early afternoon to answer questions about allegations of campaign finance breaches involving hush payments he made to a porn star while vying for the presidency.

Team MAGA raised a flag with the phrase "Trump or Death" while the anti-Trump camp unfurled a giant banner saying "Trump lies all the time" and screamed "Lock him up!"

The wife, Kirandeep K, said, "Govt can arrest Amritpal Singh, but..."

The New York Republican congressman George Santos, who is suspected of lying to get elected, made a brief appearance in the park where Trump rally organiser Marjorie Taylor Greene is scheduled to speak.

Paulina Farr made the trip from Long Island's suburbs into the city in order to "express support for our president Trump."

The retired nurse told AFP that Tuesday's demonstration was "tremendously different" from the Trump supporters' takeover of the Capitol Building in Washington on January 6.

We are aware of the reality, and we will continue. I have no fear.

The still-sealed accusations that will be made public on Tuesday may threaten to call into question the viability of 76-year-old Trump's bid for the GOP nominee in 2024.

He is also raising millions of dollars and energising his base of supporters with the case in preparation for his reelection campaign the following year.

The retired nurse described Tuesday's protest as "tremendously different" and said she had also been present when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Building in Washington on January 6.

We know the reality, and I promise to keep going. I'm not scared.

Notwithstanding the still-sealed accusations that will be made public on Tuesday, the 76-year-old Trump still has a strong chance of winning the Republican nomination for president in 2024. Nevertheless, his chances of succeeding could be in jeopardy.

He is also raising millions of dollars for his campaign to retake the White House the following year by energising his support base and capitalising on the case.
