At the end of the season, Messi is "likely" to depart PSG.

A source close to Paris St-Germain told AFP on Tuesday that Lionel Messi is "far more likely" to leave the club at the conclusion of the season than to agree to a new contract.

The insider stated that "the dynamics have radically altered with PSG less pushing to renew (his contract)" and that "no deal, no leaving yet." Yet, leaving is considerably more likely.

Messi, a World Cup champion who will turn 36 in June, joined in 2021 on a two-year contract that ends at the conclusion of this season.

Before to Sunday's 1-0 home loss to Lyon in Ligue 1, some PSG supporters jeered the Argentine's name as the teams were introduced.

Since being eliminated by Bayern Munich from the Champions League in the round of 16 last month, the fans of the club owned by Qatar are dissatisfied with the atmosphere around the team.

PSG has lost eight times in 18 games in 2023, which has caused them to exit the French Cup early even though they still lead the French table by six points.

On the likelihood that Messi's contract will be renewed and the fans' response over the weekend, the source claimed that "the fans have fundamentally transformed things." In 67 games for PSG across all competitions, Messi has contributed to 29 goals and 32 additional assists.

Yet since he captained Argentina to victory at the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the previous year, his performance has declined.

Some supporters view him as a representation of everything the club has done incorrectly by concentrating on superstar acquisitions while failing to assemble a true contender.

In order to comply with UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations, Messi presently costs PSG about 40 million euros ($43.6 million) a year in salaries. But, there have been rumours that the club may be able to offer him a new contract with a lower price.

Messi has being aggressively courted by Barcelona in an effort to convince him to come back to the Camp Nou two years after he departed the team.

Rafael Yuste, vice-president of Barcelona, acknowledged last week that there had been "communication" with Messi and added, "I would love it if he returned."

Inter Miami is rumoured to be interested in signing him for MLS, where he has also been linked to a potential move.

After convincing Kylian Mbappe to sign a new contract and turn down offers from Real Madrid a year ago, PSG would likely be doubly motivated to hang onto the France striker for at least another season if Messi leaves.
