In Indore, India, a temple floor collapse results in 35 fatalities.
A local official told AFP that the dead toll from the floor collapse at a Hindu temple in India had increased to 35 on Friday while rescue efforts continued.
A floor covering a stepwell in the central city of Indore fell on Thursday, sending dozens of worshippers celebrating a significant religious occasion plunging into it. The stepwell is a stair-lined public water source.
"There are 35 fatalities. There is still one person missing. Rescue efforts are ongoing, said Indore district magistrate Ilayaraja T. over the phone to AFP.
The accident's news left Prime Minister Narendra Modi "very grieved," he stated on Thursday.
He continued, "The state administration is driving rescue and relief activities at a swift speed. All those affected and their families are in my prayers.
The next-of-kin would receive compensation payments totaling 200,000 rupees ($2,400), according to Modi's administration.
The incident is the subject of an investigation, Madhya Pradesh state home minister Narottam Mishra told reporters.
Manish Kapooriya, a police official, told AFP that rescue operations were ongoing and that the injured were being transported to public hospitals for treatment.
Emergency personnel were seen in television footage using ropes and ladders to reach people stuck in the Madhya Pradesh state well. Other cameras showed the collapsed floor, broken steel bars, and police personnel roping in the area.
On the occasion of Ram Navami, the birthday of the Hindu deity Lord Ram, temples all over India were packed with worshippers.
According to Modi's administration, the next-of-kin would receive compensation payments totaling 200,000 rupees ($2,400).
The incident is the subject of an investigation, according to Narottam Mishra, the state of Madhya Pradesh's home minister.
Rescue attempts were still underway, and the injured were being sent to public hospitals for treatment, according to police official Manish Kapooriya, who spoke to AFP.
Emergency personnel were seen on television footage using ladders and ropes to reach people stranded in the well in the state of Madhya Pradesh. In other videos, police officials were seen deploying ropes to seal up the area as well as the collapsed floor and broken steel bars.
