Comscore predicted that a full recovery would not occur until 2024, despite the fact that "Top Gun: Maverick" took the lead.
The box office in the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2022 saw a big improvement from the two pandemic-hit years of 2021 and 2020, although it was still far behind pre-COVID levels.
According to recently revealed data from Comscore, total revenue in 2018 exceeded £978 million ($1.18 billion), an enormous increase of 64 percent above the $597 million ($720 million) total for 2021. The box office has yet to achieve the $1.57 billion ($1.3 billion) mark that it did in each of the five years before to 2019, though. According to Comscore, a complete recovery will be attained by 2024.
According to Phil Clapp, CEO of the UK Cinema Association, "there remain challenges ahead, but 2022 represents for our members a significant additional stride on the road to recovery after the enormous problems of the pandemic." "We can all forward to the future with renewed optimism thanks to the response of audiences to a wide variety of titles, the assistance of distribution colleagues, and the excellent slate already in prospect for 2023 and beyond."
Top Gun: Maverick took the top spot among the highest-grossing movies, with a total of £83.6 million ($100.9) in the U.K. and Ireland. Avatar: The Way of Water came in second place, earning an easy £51.4 million ($62 million), despite having debuted on December 16. The remaining top 10, which accounted for 43.8 percent of total revenue, included Minions: The Rise of Gru, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, The Batman, Thor: Love And Thunder, Jurassic World: Dominion, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Elvis.
With £22.7 million ($27.40 million), Sony's Matilda The Musical, based on the works of Roald Dahl, easily took first place among domestic releases. It was closely followed by Universal's Downton Abbey: A New Era, which made £15.1 million ($18.2 million), and Disney's The Banshees of Inisherin, which won numerous awards.
Disney and Universal were neck and neck for the top distributor of the year according to Comscore's statistics, with Disney's £221.8 million ($267.8 million and 22.7 percent of the total market) narrowly beating Universal's £219.3 million ($264.7 million and 22.4 percent) to claim the top spot.
A total of 911 new movies were released in theatres in the U.K. and Ireland in 2022, a major rise from the 503 movies that were released in 2021 and almost a return to the record level of 938 movies in 2019. Comscore noted that despite these production delays, there will still be a noticeable decline in blockbuster releases, with 135 movies expected to debut in more than 250 theatres in 2022 as opposed to 186 in 2019.
According to Andy Leyshon, CEO of the Film Distributors' Association, "2022's box office numbers were another positive marker for sector recovery," and "2023 should continue that upward trajectory" with an attractive and diverse release slate planned for theatres throughout the entire year. "Distributors and exhibitors will continue to collaborate to provide moviegoers with the finest out-of-home experience, and we are on on the right route to recapturing the territory box office highs experienced before the epidemic," the statement reads.
