Chinese visitors' long-awaited return is the industry's main concern, according to officials

Following the easing of travel restrictions by Beijing as part of its improved COVID-19 strategy, Cambodia is extending a warm welcome to Chinese tourists.

The chairman of the Cambodian chapter of the Pacific Asia Travel Association, Thourn Sinan, stated that "the whole of Cambodia is waiting for the return of the Chinese visitors, and we are ready to welcome them." He was replying to the much-anticipated Sunday arrival of China's gradually resumed outbound tourism.

In celebration of the 65th anniversary of the two countries' diplomatic ties, Cambodia is launching a "Cambodia-China Good Friend" campaign to welcome Chinese visitors.

The tourism ministry said in a statement on Friday that Cambodia is ready to host both Chinese and other international tourists and is "pleased to welcome Chinese tourists to visit Cambodia without any health conditions."

According to the statement, the relaxation of travel restrictions connected to the coronavirus in China, which has historically been a major source of tourists for the entire world, will significantly benefit the tourism industry in all nations.

According to the ministry, more than 2.3 million Chinese tourists travelled to Cambodia in 2019, making up 35.7% of all foreign visitors and around $1.8 billion of the country's nearly $5 billion in tourism earnings. More than half of all foreign direct investment in Cambodia that year came from China and was tied to the tourism industry.

The ministry noted that Cambodia has always focused on promoting strategies to attract Chinese tourists, such as the China Ready strategy for the Cambodian tourism industry. "Chinese investors and tourists importantly contribute to the growth of tourism and the socioeconomic development of Cambodia," the ministry said.

The announcement followed Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's declaration on January 2 that Chinese tourists are essential to the country's tourism and economic development and that Cambodia will not follow other countries in imposing additional coronavirus-related restrictions on arrivals from the Chinese mainland.

significant market

China was the world's largest significant outbound travel market prior to the outbreak. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Chinese nationals took 155 million visits overseas in 2019 and spent close to $255 billion, making up roughly one-fifth of all travel expenditures worldwide.

The Cambodian government, according to Sinan, anticipates a sizable influx of visitors from China.

However, Sinan claimed that since Thailand and Vietnam also don't have any limitations on Chinese tourists, they will compete with Cambodia for passengers.

For the Cambodian tourism industry to be better prepared, Sinan noted that more information from China regarding the rules for both inbound and outbound travel will be required.

The president of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents, Chhay Sivlin, predicted that more Chinese visitors will travel abroad following the holiday because the Chinese New Year falls on January 22 this year.

According to the tourism ministry, Cambodia will welcome roughly 7 million foreign visitors by 2025 as a result of the impending return of Chinese tourists.
