After the arrest of a legendary drug lord's son, Mexico spiralled into mayhem, with a city being set on fire and bullets being fired at a passenger plane.
After the violent arrest of Ovidio Guzman, the son of infamous drug lord El Chapo, large areas of northwest Mexico have sunk into anarchy, according to Mexican authorities, who also reveal that Guzman's extradition to the US has been stopped.
Social media videos depicted the town of Culiacan, the scene of the tragic arrest operation, as being under siege by armed Sinaloa Cartel members who blocked streets and burned infrastructure ablaze.
As the cartel rioted for the liberation of its head, the footage shows significant areas of the city being devoured by flames. Civilians also report that local businesses were robbed.
One video shows what appear to be cartel gunmen trying to take out police and army helicopters. In other videos, cartel members can be seen obstructing roads and shooting at Mexican soldiers.
Defense Minister Luis Cresencio Sandoval reported that two military aircraft had to make an emergency landing after being attacked by a single civilian aircraft that had been targeted on the runway.
Guzman was captured on Thursday in Culiacan after a protracted and violent operation that claimed the lives of 19 alleged criminals and ten troops.
The high-security Altiplano jail in central Mexico, from which his father El Chapo once escaped, received him after being airlifted to Mexico City.
El Chapo rode a motorcycle to freedom in 2015 after tunnelling out of the supermax prison. Since Guzman's arrival, security has been stepped up, according to the authorities.
The Mexican Minister of Defense stated that one of those slain in the operation was a colonel who oversaw an army unit.
While 21 gunmen were detained, another 35 troops who had bullet wounds were transported to the hospital.
According to the State Department, they "began spending substantial sums of the funds into the purchase of marijuana in Mexico and cocaine in Colombia."
As they started experimenting with making methamphetamine, they also started buying a lot of ephedrine from Argentina and setting up the smuggling of the substance into Mexico.
The brothers are also accused of managing 11 methamphetamine production facilities in Sinaloa.
Pressure causes the halt of extradition
However, a federal judge in Mexico City blocked Guzman's extradition to the US due to the allegations just one day after his detention. Law enforcement in Mexico had already warned that the extradition procedure would take time.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard revealed a US arrest order from September 2019 on Thursday, but he added that there were still legal requirements that would delay the extradition. He said that Guzman was also the subject of legal action in Mexico.

At Culiacan International Airport, passengers on an AeroMexico flight were compelled to hide for cover as their aircraft came under fire. As the aeroplane taxied, the passengers could be seen hiding in the aisle and under the seats. The body of the jet was struck by at least one bullet, according to the American Broadcasting Corporation.
People in Culiacan were instructed to seek cover while the police, the military, and the drug cartel each invaded the area.

Largest possible award
Since the former head of the Sinaloa cartel was extradited, Guzman, also known as "El Raton" (The Mouse), is said to have assisted in managing the business affairs of his father.
Following El Chapo's successful life sentence, the US is requesting his extradition for drug trafficking and has offered up to $5 million in reward money.
According to the US State Department, after the passing of another brother, Edgar Guzman-Lopez, Joaquin Guzman-Lopez and Guzman "acquired a substantial deal of the drugs revenues."

Another federal judge reportedly mandated that Guzman be held in preventative detention until his extradition for 60 days.
Guzman was previously detained by federal officials in October 2019, but as his syndicate rioted in the streets, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador ordered his release.
Despite facing harsh criticism, Obrador insisted that the choice was made to stop additional carnage.
Biden gets ready to travel to a troubled Mexico
Just days before US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are scheduled to visit Mexico City for the North American Leaders Summit, there was an arrest and ensuing commotion.
Culiacan residents were told to take cover when the police, military, and drug cartels each entered the town.
After an extended and deadly operation that resulted in the deaths of 19 accused criminals and ten soldiers, Guzman was apprehended on Thursday in Culiacan.
He was evacuated to Mexico City and taken to the high-security Altiplano prison, from which his father El Chapo once escaped.
El Chapo arrived at freedom on a motorcycle
For bringing in hundreds of tonnes of cocaine over a 25-year period, El Chapo is currently receiving a life sentence in the US.
His gang, which is still among the most powerful in Mexico, is accused by Washington of spreading fentanyl, a synthetic drug that is nearly 50 times more potent than heroin, throughout American neighbourhoods to fuel an opioid epidemic.

According to the US State Department, Guzman is accused of ordering the killings of informants, a drug dealer, and a Mexican singer who declined to sing at his wedding.
