Johnny Depp and Amber Heard resolve their slander lawsuit.
The Aquaman actress announced on Instagram that she is giving up her effort to contest the damages because she "just cannot go through" another trial.
The actor Amber Heard revealed on Monday that she had decided to settle the significant defamation case launched by her ex-husband Johnny Depp after a "very painful" period of consideration.
The settlement, which comes after a Virginia jury ordered Heard to pay the Pirates of the Caribbean actor $10 million, was not disclosed by Heard in an Instagram post.
According to people with direct knowledge, the settlement requires Heard, 36, to pay her ex-husband, 59, $1 million. This information was provided by the entertainment website TMZ.
Heard, who played the title role in the film Aquaman, announced she was settling the case instead of appealing the jury's verdict on damages because she "just cannot go through" another trial.
"I have made a very tough decision to settle the slander case," she added after giving it much thought.
My unguarded testimony was used as entertainment and fodder for social media, therefore I've lost faith in the American court system, she said.
The chance to free me from something I tried to abandon more than six years ago is finally here, she said, and on terms, I can accept.
"I have not admitted anything. This does not constitute a concession. After a lengthy six-week trial centered on hotly debated claims of domestic abuse, the jury found Depp and Heard to be responsible for slander, but they sided more strongly with the Pirates actor.
Depp received $10.35 million in damages from the verdict. $2 million was given to Heard, who had filed a countersuit.
I "defended my truth."
In a December 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post, Heard referred to herself as a "public figure symbolizing domestic abuse," and Depp filed a lawsuit in response. Depp sued Heard for claiming that he was a domestic abuser and wanted $50 million in damages, despite the fact that the Texas native Heard omitted his name from the article.
Heard filed a countersuit for $100 million, alleging that Depp's attorney, Adam Waldman, had slandered her by telling the Daily Mail that her allegations of abuse were "a fake." Millions of people watched the case's live feed, which included graphic and confidential information about the private lives of Hollywood celebrities. Following the trial, Heard's attorneys claimed that the actress lacked the financial means to compensate Depp for his $10 million in damages.
Heard claimed in a post on Instagram that she "defended my truth and in doing so, my life as I knew it was ruined.
She claimed that the abuse she received on social media was an exaggerated portrayal of how women are victimized again after they speak out. "I experienced a form of humiliation that I just can't go through again.
The optimum result, she argued, "would be a retrial where a fresh jury would have to review the evidence again, even if my US appeal is successful. "I can't possibly go through that a third time,"
