In Toronto condo building shooting, six people perish, including the culprit.

After a tragic mass shooting at a condominium complex in the Canadian city of Vaughan, Ontario, on December 19, 2022, flowers are left at the scene.

TORONTO - A high-rise condominium complex near Toronto was the scene of a shooting on Sunday that left six people dead, including the suspect, and one person injured. The 73-year-old gunman is suspected of killing his neighbors before being killed by police.

After getting a call of an active shooter at around 7:20 p.m. ET on Sunday (00:20 GMT on Monday), police sped to the Ontario city of Vaughan, which is located approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of downtown Toronto, according to York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween.

Francesco Villi, a resident of the 16-story building, was the suspect, according to MacSween, who claimed that police located him before shooting and killing him there. By his actions last night, the cop who killed the suspect "very likely saved lives," according to MacSween.

In the structure, all victims resided. A 66-year-old woman was hospitalized with significant injuries, along with three adult men and two adult women who also perished.

Three of the victims were condo board members, but the shooter's motivation is still under investigation, he added, adding that the inquiry is still underway.

According to a representative for Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU), authorities found deceased bodies on various floors and a semi-automatic handgun believed to have been the shooting weapon.

The suspect's post-mortem examination was planned for Tuesday, according to the SIU, which investigates fatal accidents involving police.

Despite having far stronger gun rules than the US, Canadians are nonetheless permitted to own firearms as long as they have a license. Handguns that are restricted or illegal must also be registered.

"Everyone is appalled to have heard this news last night and to have woken up to it this morning. People are just utterly shocked "Steven Del Duca, the mayor of Vaughan, said on Monday.

In Vaughan, there are roughly 320,000 people.

Data from 2020 shows that although Canada's gun homicide rate is lower than that of the United States, it is still greater than that of other developed nations and has been increasing. Between 2009 and 2020, handguns were the primary weapon used in the majority of violent offences using firearms.

A ban on the sale, purchase, or transfer of handguns went into force in October as part of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government's effort to combat gun violence.

Trudeau wrote on Twitter, "To the families and friends of the victims of yesterday's massacre in Vaughan: I'm keeping you in my thoughts.
