Harvey Weinstein, a former Hollywood mogul, was found guilty of rape by a jury.

Harvey Weinstein, a former movie producer who became the target of #MeToo sexual abuse allegations five years ago, was found guilty of rape and two additional counts of sexual assault by a Los Angeles jury on Monday. This is the second conviction for the former Hollywood power broker.

The jury exonerated Weinstein of charges involving a second claimed victim while finding him guilty of rape, forced oral copulation, and sexual penetration by a foreign object involving one woman, according to the Los Angeles Superior Court.

The wife of Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, who had previously admitted to being Jane Doe 4 in the trial, made two allegations, including one of rape, but the jury was unable to reach a decision.

Weinstein, 70, was found guilty of sexual misconduct in New York and is currently serving a 23-year jail term.

Shortly after the judgement, Jane Doe 1, the former model and actress who Weinstein was found guilty of raping at a Los Angeles hotel in 2013, released a statement.

"That night in 2013, Harvey Weinstein permanently ruined a part of me, and I will never get that back. Although the criminal trial was horrible and Weinstein's attorneys tortured me while I was testifying, I persisted because I felt I had to see this through to the very end, which I did. I really hope Weinstein never leaves his cage during his lifetime."

On the counts on which he was found guilty, Weinstein faces up to 18 years in jail; however, aggravating circumstances may push that number up to 24 years. On Tuesday, attorneys will be back in court to make arguments regarding aggravating circumstances.

While we are encouraged that the jury found Weinstein guilty on some of the counts, we are sad that the jury could not come to a unanimous decision on Jane Doe 4, Siebel Newsom's lawyer Elizabeth Fegan said in a statement.

She "will continue to battle against a system that allows the victim to be humiliated and retraumatized in the name of justice on behalf of all women and all survivors of abuse."

In Los Angeles, four women accused Weinstein of rape and sexual assault on seven separate occasions between 2004 and 2013.

Weinstein was cleared by the jury on a felony charge of

alleged assault on Jane Doe 3 involved a sexual battery by constraint in 2010. Charges of sexual battery by constraint stemming from an alleged attack in February 2013 against Jane Doe 2 as well as counts of forcible oral copulation and forcible rape stemming from an alleged attack against Siebel Newsom in 2005 were not decided by the jury.

"I am obviously unhappy that the jury was split on some of the counts, but I hope that its partial findings deliver at least some degree of justice to the victims," said Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón in a statement.

Harvey Weinstein, a former movie producer, appears in court in Los Angeles.

The strong producer of "Pulp Fiction" and "Shakespeare in Love," the women claimed in their frequently explicit testimony, masturbated in front of them and touched or raped them.

Weinstein was charged with two counts of rape and five counts of sexual assault based on testimony from Siebel Newsom and three other women.

In support of the prosecution's claims that Weinstein frequently exploited his position as a powerful figure in Hollywood to prey on women, four additional women provided similar accounts.

They claimed that after promising to assist them in getting an audition or a book deal, he set up meetings where his staff vanished, leaving them alone with him.

Weinstein pled not guilty and claimed that all of his sexual interactions were consensual.

The women's defence lawyers contended that they willingly had sex with Weinstein because they thought he would advance their careers, as part of what they called a pervasive "casting couch" culture in the movie business. They said that the sexual interaction was faked in two of the cases.

Additionally, they emphasised the fact that some of the accusers, like Siebel Newsom, continued to communicate with Weinstein, which they claimed was inexplicable if he had abused them.

Weinstein threw a pre-Oscars party that Siebel Newsom and her husband attended, and throughout the years, she exchanged numerous cordial letters with Weinstein.

In February 2020, Weinstein was found guilty in New York of sexual misconduct. In July 2021, he was returned from New York to a prison in Los Angeles.

Weinstein is contesting his guilt and his prison term in New York.

The #MeToo movement of women speaking out against sexual harassment and abuse by powerful men in journalism, politics, and other arenas was fueled in part by allegations against Weinstein.
