Box office: "Black Panther 2" crosses $400 million in the United States despite a poor weekend.
The overall domestic revenue fell to one of the lowest levels of the year because there were no new big-budget films. One encouraging development is that "The Whale" earns the highest opening location average in 2022 for specialized box offices.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever easily maintained its position at the top of the box office rankings in its fifth weekend, taking in $11.1 million to become only the third movie of 2022 to surpass $400 million domestically.
The Marvel and Disney film has already made $409.8 million domestically, and $767.8 million internationally. It will shortly surpass fellow 2022 Marvel/Disney film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($411.3 million), which currently holds the second-highest domestic box office position in North America, after Top Gun: Maverick ($718.1 million). It will shortly surpass DC's The Batman to win the No. 5 spot worldwide for the year ($770.8 million).

Otherwise, the weekend was miserable. According to Comscore, total ticket sales were anticipated to be $37 million, which is the second-worst performance of the year following the Jan. 28–30 weekend ($34.9 million). The cause? Hollywood is waiting until James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water hits theatres on December 16 before releasing any commercial material. Additionally, there is a continuing scarcity of output as a result of pandemic-related postproduction delays.
Nevertheless, there was excellent news from the specialized box office.
The Whale, directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Brendan Fraser, opened at six locations with $380,000, beating out fellow A24 movie Everything Everywhere All At Once to record the best opening location average of the year thus far of $60,000. The opening location average is at its highest level since 2020.
But things weren't perfect at the specialized box office. Empire of Light by Sam Mendes, which debuted in 110 places, brought in an estimated $152,000, with a pitiful $1,379 per location average.
Tommy Wirkola's holiday-themed comedy-thriller Violent Night, which was once again in the top 10, came in second place behind Wakanda Forever with a respectable $8.7 million in its second outing for a respectable domestic total of $26.7 million despite a decline of 29%.
Third place went to Disney Animation's Strange World, which only made $3.6 million domestically and $53.5 million worldwide.
The Menu from Searchlight maintained its strong position on the chart, coming in sixth with $2.7 million. The specialized movie has already made an amazing $57.7 million globally and $29 million domestically.
Following Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans, which is holding its theatre count at less than 1,000 locations until significant award nominations are made public, came Sony's Devotion and Warner Bros.'s Black Adam. For a meager $7.3 million domestic total, the movie made an additional $1.2 million. Next weekend, premium VOD will release The Fabelmans.

The romantic comedy Spoiler Alert starring Michael Showalter went from playing in five theatres to 781 during its second weekend. The movie only made $700,000 and finished in 10th place, which wasn't very good for Focus Features. The domestic gross for the movie is $800,000.
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish from Universal and DreamWorks Animation made $8.9 million overseas in its first 24 regions. To give it some breathing room from Avatar 2, the family movie is opening offshore early.
The Last Wish continues its global release on December 21 in North America. It will debut in China two days later, according to a Sunday announcement from Universal.
