Beginning in South Korea, BTS member Jin's conscription into the military
The eldest member of BTS, Jin, began his required military service in South Korea on Tuesday, joining other new recruits at a boot camp close to the North Korean border, according to several publications.
As required by South Korean law for all eligible men between the ages of 18 and 35, Jin, whose full name is Kim Seok-jin, 30, is the first member of BTS to begin his 18-month military service. The ages of the BTS members range from 25 to 30.
Following rumors and public discussion on whether the K-pop superstars would seek a waiver to avoid military service, the group's record label, Bighit Music, declared in October that BTS members will enlist. The performers will stagger, according to the label.

A few hundred supporters gathered at the Yeoncheon army camp in northern Gyeonggi province on Tuesday when Jin arrived there in a procession of six black vans, according to CNN.
In a statement earlier this month, Bighit Music asked the public to stay away from the base since Jin would be driving there to avoid traffic and accidents.

The Associated Press stated that Jin will participate in five weeks of basic military training at the base, which will include rifle shooting, grenade tossing, and marching drills. Then, he and the other soldiers will be given to army groups spread out across the nation.
According to historians, mandatory military conscription in South Korea was instituted in 1957, not long after the Korean War, in order to maintain a military force against North Korea.
On his Weverse social media page over the weekend, Jin shared a selfie with his new buzzcut in place of his usual black hair. The BTS members gathered for a shot with Jin and touched his practically shaved head in a farewell tweet. Our brother! Enjoy your service safely! I adore you," the message declared.
Jin released "The Astronaut," a song he co-wrote with the British rock group Coldplay, as his debut solo single just after Bighit revealed BTS would be enlisting in the military in October.
