Before the Oscar voting starts on January 12, around 100 films from across the globe are vying to be one of the 15 semifinalists.
Prior to the start of the Oscar voting season on January 12, 92 titles will compete for a featured slot on the 15-title shortlist for the international feature category, which will be revealed on December 21. Denmark, Germany, Mexico, and Russia are the four nations that have received three mentions on the shortlist over the past five years. If the shortlist for this year is any indication of those nations' historical success with the Academy, voters may have the opportunity to recognize the films Holy Spider from Denmark, All Quiet on the Western Front from Germany, and Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths from Mexico. The Russian Film Academy declared on September 26 that it will not be submitting a movie for review.
Within Sand, the first Saudi film to be shot in Neom, has been acquired by Middle Eastern distributor Front Row.

Best Nominations from London Critics' Circle Include "Banshees of Inisherin" and "Aftersun"
Other top contenders this year include Belgium's Close, which won the Cannes Grand Prix and was chosen by the National Board of Review as the best international film, Austria's Corsage, which gave actress Vicky Krieps the Un Certain Regard award for best performance at Cannes, and Cambodia's Return to Seoul (selected as best film by the Boston Society of Film Critics),
Poland's EO, which was named best international film by the New York Film Critics Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, South Korea's Decision to Leave, Pakistan's Joyland, which won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes, France's Saint Omer, which won the Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival, and (which won Park Chan-wook the prize for best director at Cannes).
Although S.S. Rajamouli's historical action epic RRR received a Golden Globe nomination for best motion picture, non-English language, on December 12, one shouldn't anticipate seeing it on the international feature shortlist. The coming-of-age picture Last Film Show, directed by Pan Nalin, is about a young kid who dreams of becoming a filmmaker. It is India's official Oscar submission. But even so, RRR is still a strong possibility for additional Oscars, particularly for "Naatu Naatu," the original song featured in the film's enormously popular dance-battle climax.
