After testing positive for COVID-19, James Cameron will not be present at the Hollywood premiere of "Avatar: The Way of Water."
After testing positive for COVID-19, Avatar: The Way of Water director James Cameron will not attend Monday night's Los Angeles premiere of the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Jim has COVID but is in good health. He had a positive test as part of a regular testing cycle. He won't be at the premiere, but he will continue to fulfill his commitments electronically, a Disney representative said.
The virus was first made public by the director on Sunday evening at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County's opening event for his multimedia presentation Pressure: James Cameron into the Abyss. He was scheduled to attend the event in person, but he instead spoke via Zoom at the opening reception.
"I want to start by offering my sincere apologies to everyone present tonight. My own gathering is off-limits. I was traveling extensively [for the premieres of Avatar: The Way of Water]; yet, I began to feel a little heavy on the aircraft from Tokyo. At the exhibit's opening ceremony, Cameron said, "I got tested and sure enough, I have COVID, so obviously I can't be there, endanger other people.
The Avatar director and the entire ensemble attended the movie's world premiere only last week in London, along with producer Jon Landau. Cameron also attended the Friday and Saturday premieres in Seoul, South Korea, and Tokyo, Japan. But the director did not attend the Academy Awards screening of Avatar: The Way of Water.
In the sequel to 2009's Avatar, which won three Oscars and made $2.92 billion, starring Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Edie Falco, and Kate Winslet, Cameron is bringing back his blue 3D aliens.
For a recent cover story, the director said that Avatar: The Way of Water was a ten-year passion project that satisfied a goal to build a franchise with numerous editions.
On December 16, Avatar: The Way of Water will be screened in theatres.
