After a seven-year absence, Iran appoints an ambassador to Saudi Arabia

Image
State media announced on Wednesday that Iran has appointed an ambassador to Saudi Arabia, completing a thaw in relations more than seven years after the regional foes broke ties. Alireza Enayati, the new representative, was previously Iran's ambassador to Kuwait, the foreign minister's assistant, and the director general of Gulf affairs at the foreign ministry, according to the English-language Iran Daily. His nomination was not immediately confirmed by the Islamic Republic's foreign ministry. After years of conflict, the major players in the Middle East unexpectedly reconciled on March 10 in China. In 2016, Saudi Arabia broke off diplomatic ties with Iran after attacks on its embassies in Tehran and Mashhad amid demonstrations against the execution of Before committing to the reconciliation accord, the two governments had many rounds of negotiations in Oman and Iraq. Years passed before they made amends after supporting opposite parties in crisis areas all around the Midd...

To continue hosting the Asia Cup, PCB updates its "hybrid model."

Image
The Pakistan Cricket Board has presented a tweaked version of the proposed "hybrid model" for this year's Asia Cup in an effort to allay concerns from the Bangladesh and Sri Lankan cricket authorities. The United Arab Emirates was the neutral location suggested in the original "hybrid model," but the Bangladesh Cricket Board and Sri Lanka Cricket reportedly objected to travel to and from Pakistan, the host nation, to that country. They also reportedly had reservations about the region's hot climate in September, when the Asia Cup is scheduled to take place. India had firmly opposed travelling across the border, but the PCB first suggested the "hybrid format" during an Asian Cricket Council meeting in Bahrain last month to ensure at least a portion of the event is staged in Pakistan. If the ACC members accept the request, which was made by the PCB three days ago, Pakistan will only host four of the initial group stage matches before the other match...

World at a "turning point," a "war" has been declared against Russia: Putin

Image
At the Red Square Victory Day parade in Moscow on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the world was at a "changing moment" and that a "war" had been declared against Russia. Putin declared that Russia would win and said that its forces' future in Ukraine "rests on" their success. 15 months into Russia's offensive in Ukraine, the customary Soviet-style celebration commemorating Moscow's victory over the Nazis was held despite security concerns. At the parade, which also featured elderly veterans and soldiers from Russia's campaign in Ukraine, Putin declared that "civilization is today at a decisive turning point once again." He declared, "A battle has broken out against our motherland." Putin urged victory for Russia: "For Russia, for our armed forces, for victory! Hurrah!” The Russian president has been portraying the war in Ukraine as an existential one that the West has intensified by backing the ...

The Rubicon has been crossed with the arrest of IMRAN Khan. All dreams of a negotiated breakthrough in the continuing political impasse can be put to rest as new confrontations between the PTI and the state have broken out.

Image
According to the interior minister, Mr. Khan was detained because he refused to cooperate with a corruption probe into an alleged land deal involving money that real estate magnate Malik Riaz allegedly owed to the government. Recent events, particularly Mr. Khan's last altercation with the military, seem to indicate that he might have been apprehended for a completely other cause. The Punjab Rangers, not the Islamabad Police, were sent in to capture him from the grounds of the Islamabad High Court, which would appear to confirm the latter hypothesis. The type and location of the demonstrations that erupted after Mr. Khan's detention yesterday indicate that the populace is also angry with the military. Video evidence from a number of protests revealed that the crowds were furious enough to break boundaries no one had dared to previously. Because to Pakistan's unprecedented polycrisis, the military's past has been swiftly coming to light over the past 13 months, particul...

Would Jason Momoa portray the bad guy in Tiger vs. Pathaan with Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan?

Image
The recent rumours in Indian media that Hollywood action star Jason Momoa is being considered for the role of the villain in the Yash Raj Film-produced movie have only served to heighten the anticipation for the upcoming collaboration of Indian superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan's Tiger vs. Pathaan. Siddharth Anand, an Indian filmmaker who has previously directed the recently released spy films Pathaan and War for the same production company, is helming the picture (2019). Avinash Singh Rathore, aka Tiger, who was portrayed by Salman in the Tiger franchise, and Pathaan, who was portrayed by Shah Rukh in his most recent film Pathaan, would be combined into one character in the future movie. This will be a part of YRF's spy world, which will also feature the two Khans, Indian actors Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff, who play agents in the film War, and other actors. If accurate, Momoa will have previously been spotted with Shah Rukh. The two actors first connected at the 20...

As prospects for peace grow, the Yemen prisoner swap will begin on Thursday.

Image
A Yemeni government official announced that a prisoner swap involving hundreds of prisoners from Yemen's terrible civil war will begin on Thursday amid growing optimism for peace. The official stated on Tuesday that over 900 inmates, the most of whom were fighting alongside Houthi rebels, will be flown between Yemen and Saudi Arabia, which is in charge of the military coalition fighting on behalf of the overthrown government. Since the Saudi-led operation started in March 2015, several months after the Iran-backed Houthis took control of the nation's capital Sanaa, the poorest nation in the Arabian Peninsula has been at war. According to the UN, Yemen is experiencing one of the greatest humanitarian catastrophes in the world, with hundreds of thousands of deaths from both direct and indirect causes. According to Majid Fadael, the designated spokesman for the government delegation negotiating the swap, the prisoner exchange, which will be the largest since October 2020, would ...
